e-Transmission Fluids

PETRONAS Integra e-Transmission fluids have been developed to cover a range of applications from lubricating to optimization of performance. Integra has also been designed for specialist Electric Drive Unit (EDU) applications. We carefully formulate the fluids to meet OEM and customer technical requirements using high-quality base oils. We pay particular attention to providing excellent wear and corrosion protection, but also optimizing energy efficiency through enhanced friction reduction and heat dissipation.

e-Cooling Fluids

PETRONAS Thermal e-Cooling fluids have been developed to cover the thermal management requirements of batteries, power electronics and indirectly cooled electric motors in EDUs/e-Axles. Water/glycol-based products are formulated to prevent corrosion and deposit formation in the cooling system. For batteries that require direct cooling we have designed high-quality, dielectric fluids with viscometrical and thermal properties matched to the specific application requirements.

e-Greases

PETRONAS Glide e-Greases are based on technologies specifically selected for grease applications in electric vehicles, particularly key components in the driveline system such as constant velocity joints and wheel hub bearings. Greases have an important role to play in reducing the noise, vibrations and harshness experienced by the vehicle’s driver and/or passengers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) do not have an internal combustion engine (ICE), they are powered by the Electric Drive Unit: an integrated system of e-motor, e-transmission and power electronics that manage and control the torque transfer and energy flow from motor to wheels. The EDU requires dedicated fluids offering thermal management and materials compatibility properties together with wear and corrosion protection to keep performance and system durability overtime.

Electric cars do not have an internal combustion engine, and so there is no need for a conventional engine oil, but they require tailored fluids to lubricate and cool down both e-motor and e-transmission, grant system protection and keep the vehicle energy saving performance. Our PETRONAS IONA INTEGRA fluids have been developed to improve the EDU efficiency, reduce the energy consumption and extend the driving range.
 

The e-transmission, that usually is a one or two-speed reduction gearbox, is a crucial system for BEV and has to manage instant and high torque, usually higher than in ICE vehicles, hence requires tailored lubricants. The oil has multiple roles: as a lubricant, it reduces the friction and wear on the moving parts, such as reduction gears, final drives and differentials. It also functions as a coolant, absorbing and transferring the heat produced by the friction between gears helping prevent overheating.  It also protects the components against rust and corrosion to keep the system durability.
 

In dry Electric Drive Unit the e-motor is mechanically sealed from the e-transmission and requires the lubrication of the reduction gear only. In wet EDU e-motors and e-transmission are integrated and could be lubricated by the same fluid. PETRONAS IONA eDrive has been developed specifically to increase the efficiency of both wet and dry EDU, providing optimal protection and insulation of the integrated system.
 

In Battery Electric Vehicles the ‘engine’ is an electric motor and lubricant is mainly required for the transmission system, that usually is a one or two-speed reduction gearbox. In high performance BEVs the lubricant may also be used to cool the electric motor and requires a lubricant formulated for this specific application.
 

In electric vehicles the battery must work at controlled temperature is crucial to keep efficiency and safety, special fluids are required. Our last generation PETRONAS IONA THERMAL fluids prevent freezing and overheating during drive and charging operations, keeping the battery in the optimal thermal range and providing low conductivity properties to grant system insulation.
 

Both mineral and synthetic based oils are mostly derived from crude oil. Mineral oils are generally suited to older vehicle models and are usually less expensive than synthetic oils, which are modified to improve their protective and lubricant properties so they can perform in more advanced engines.
